Leslie Hart Dedication

By Roberta Leonard

On June 15, 2024, members of the Wolcott Historical Society and descendants of Leslie & Loretta Harts' family gathered to dedicate a plaque to Leslie Hart, who was caretaker of the upper reservoir and dock area located at the end of Scovill Road in Wolcott. Mr. Hart was caretaker from 1936-1985. He and his wife Loretta lived with their 5 children in the house located on the property.

Mr. Hart had many duties, including renting boats and selling live bait to the fishermen. Approximately 40 people attended the dedication ceremony. More than 30 members of the Hart family were there, including Leslie Hart's last surviving child, whose name was also Leslie Hart, but was affectionately nicknamed "Whiz". It was a beautiful day and a true reunion, for some family members had not seen each other in 30 years.

This area by the dock at the end of Scovill Road where the plaque is located has many wonderful memories not only for the Hart family, but for many long-time Wolcott residents as well. It continues to be a very special gathering place for fishermen and for the many citizens of Wolcott, who walk the trail around the lake.

It was such an honor for me to be a part of this long overdue dedication. Many thanks to Flo Goodman, who worked collectively with family members to help organize the event and for her work on the very informative pamphlets that were handed out.

Thank you also to Mayor Dunn and the members of the Historical Society who attended and a big thank you to all the family members who came from near and far in honor of the memory of Leslie Hart.
