TexNet AXIP is working on -------------------- Deveoloping TexNet AXIP software and sites. Mechanics of the List --------------------- The TexNet AXIP mailing list charter is to provide a forum for the exchange of information about packet radio networking and network building. News, hints & kinks, case studies, and such are welcome parts that we hope will become an important resource for those participating in the forum. TAPR is committed to the success of the various SIG lists. All lists have tremendous potential, but TAPR does not want that potential to be lost. The criteria for appropriate publication are simple: messages should 1) advance the discussion at hand, 2) not perpetuate one of our many Holy Wars (i.e., my OS is bigger than your OS, or "your protocol stinks because"), and 3) avoid personal attacks (FLAMES). In addition, we wish to re-post traffic generated here on the PBBS network. Therefore, refrain from using profanity, and do not use the forum to promote commercial activity. Please stay focused on the issues which relate to the purpose of the forum charter. If a messages from individuals over time continue to abuse these standards, they will be removed from the list. If problems are frequent to the point of problems, the mail list can become moderated at the discretion of the SIG chairperson. Our hope is that SIG members will bear in mind the goals of the SIGs when posting messages, and that very few messages will be considered outside of these standards. If you feel that you must FLAME someone, do it via personal mail or use one of the many other places available to vent spleen. The forums are setup for positive, productive, cooperative discussions. ----- To post messages to the texnetaxip list, send email to: texnetaxip@lists.tapr.org To unsubscribe from this mailing list, surf to: http://www.tapr.org/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=texnetaxip or send email to: lyris@lists.tapr.org with the following line in the body of the message: unsub texnetaxip The host of this list is: Tucson Amateur Packet Radio (TAPR) tapr@tapr.org http://www.tapr.org 8987-309 E Tanque Verde Rd. #337, Tucson, AZ 85749-9399, phone 940-383-0000, fax 940-566-2544 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just so that you have all the commands neatly contained in one place, here is just about everything you will need to know. In the past week, there was a major upgrade at my ISP oknet1.net. They added another group of IP addresses and also an new Portmaster 4. Due to all of the re-arranging taking place, my TAL radio and router had to be removed from the equipment rack. This gave me a chance to take the radio and router home and begin some troubleshooting on the routing situation that has given me headaches since the TAL radio was installed at the ISP. Before I go any further, I should mention that the new group of IP addresses has relieved some of the problems that came from a lack of available addresses at the ISP. Now for a rundown on IP addresses. 198.247.208.1 is the IP address of the Cisco 2500 router at my ISP. 198.247.207.81 is the ethernet port on the TAL router at the ISP. 198.247.207.82 is the address of the router at the ISP. 198.247.207.83 is the address of the router at my home QTH. 198.247.207.84 is the ethernet port on the router at my home QTH. 198.247.207.10 is the IP address on my wa5vms linux box which routes to the rest on my ham network. I set up another Linux box in my shack that is connected to the ethernet port on the ISP TAL router(via a crossover cable). The IP address of the "new" linux machine is set to 198.247.207.1, the same as the router at the ISP. The machine name of this computer is "router". Routing in the TAL routers was modified a bit and the correct static routes were entered into the "router" linux box. At that point, everything was up and running fine. I did a few things around the house and came back to test the link. When I tried to ping the wa5vms machine at .10 from the .1 router machine, I received no response. WHAT!! Things were working just fine 30 minutes earlier. I decided to do a telnet to .10. Telnet worked fine. The all of a sudden, I could ping .10. After a bit of testing over the past couple of days, I have come to one conclusion, I have a flakey ethernet port on the TAL router that I was using at the ISP. Tom N5EG, this explains why you were not able to get a traceroute response from this router when you tried a couple of weeks ago. This is how I have determined the problem to be within the TAL radio ethernet port. When it is broken, telnet traceroute and ping from the .1 router linux box to the TAL ethernet 198.247.207.81 address will not work. If you telnet from the wa5vms linux box over the radio link to .81, it works fine. After you ping .81 from wa5vms, then all functions to .81 from .1 work fine. When you do a telnet session from the router machine to wa5vms, it will always work. If the ISP router is "broken", any attempts to do a traceroute or ping .10 will fail though. After you do a telnet session to .10, the failures go away. When the ISP router has failed, I still see activity on the ethernet port LED of that router that indicating that my packets are reaching the router. If I start a ping session and leave it for a while, I start gettings replies back. It may take a while though maybe 20 failed tries before pings are returned. If I wanted to, I could beat this subject to death for at least another half a page with tests that I ran. The bottom line is this, there appears to be a problem with the ethernet port on the ISP TAL router. I have also determined that once I have the port passing data, it will continue to work until the port is inactive for a period of time. This period of inactivity could be anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours. I think the first step is to swap routers and install the "good" router at the ISP. Then I need to check the "bad router". Seems as though I remember Greg mentioning a crummy connector inside the router that feeds the RJ45 jack on the ethernet port. One thing for sure, if there is a problem router, I need it at the home QTH where I can get my hands on it if necessary. If the world does not fall apart, I plan to try to put the equipment back in place at the ISP on Thursday Feb 4. I have business that will require that I take off work for part of the afternoon. Figure I might as well take off the whole day and play some too. Tom, when does the Q-Report info need to be submitted. There are a couple of changes that I need to make to the article that I sent to you. If all else fails maybe a short addendum at the end.
