There are now two GUI interfaces: one based on a station ID/callsign being entered and one based on a grid square or latitude/longitude pair being entered. If you have links that go directly to one of the .asp pages, those links still work correctly. javAPRS Findu is now using javAPRS 2.2 build 17 which has a map-follows-station function and a dead reckoning function for single stations. 73, Pete Loveall AE5PL http://www.ae5pl.net mailto:pete@ae5pl.net --- You are currently subscribed to aprsnews as: lyris.aprsnews@tapr.org To unsubscribe send a blank email to leave-aprsnews-839E@lists.tapr.org Questions regarding the SIG go to the SIG administrator: wa1lou@tapr.org From bounce-aprsnews-839@lists.tapr.org Sat Apr 6 10:38:57 2002 Received: from lists.tapr.org (lists.tapr.org [204.17.217.24]) by tapr.org (8.9.3/8.9.3/1.13) with SMTP id KAA17652 for ; Sat, 6 Apr 2002 10:38:51 -0600 (CST) User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/10.0.0.1331 Date: Sat, 06 Apr 2002 11:38:17 -0500 Subject: [aprsnews] FW: NOAA Environmental Hero Award to APRS person From: Stan Horzepa To: "APRS Announcements" Message-ID: In-Reply-To: <005101c1dd1c$72fb9e40$f7925ecc@qwest.net> Mime-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset="ISO-8859-1" List-Unsubscribe: List-Software: Lyris Server version 3.0 List-Subscribe: List-Owner: X-List-Host: Tucson Amateur Packet Radio X-Message-Id: Sender: bounce-aprsnews-839@lists.tapr.org Precedence: bulk Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by tapr.org id KAA17652 Russ, KB0TVJ, asked me to pass along this news. 73, Stan, WA1LOU ------ Forwarded Message From: "Russ Chadwick" Date: Sat, 6 Apr 2002 04:37:58 +0100 To: Cc: , Subject: NOAA Environmental Hero Award to APRS person Each year NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) gives a number of Environmental Hero Awards to people who don't work for NOAA, but have contributed a great deal to NOAA's ongoing job of providing environmental services to the citizens of the United States. This year NOAA's Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Office gave five of these awards and one of them went to an amateur radio operator deeply involved in APRS. On April 6, the office of David Evans, the Associate Administrator of NOAA in charge of research sent out an e-mail with this statement, ..... I am pleased to announce the NOAA Research winners of NOAA's Environmental Hero Award. This award is for "real people" outside of NOAA who have volunteered their time or who have worked closely with NOAA through their respective organizations. Please join me in extending congratulations to the winners. Name: Dr. Steve Dimse Organization/Location: Cudjoe Key, FL Accomplishment: real-time citizen weather observations NOAA Nominating Division: NOAA Research ..... After that there were four other names or organizations with these accomplishments: Environmental awareness/safe and pollution free Hawaii Development of GFDL hurricane forecast system Assisted with CMDL Cooperative Global Air Sampling Network Conservation of Great Lakes Fisheries Each of these winners will receive a signed letter of appreciation from the NOAA Administrator. Steve Dimse has been instrumental in developing the network of citizen and ham radio weather observers who send in their data to findu.com. Presently there are about 570 registered stations and about 350 to 390 are contributing data at any one time. The contributed data are used for numerical weather prediction research at NOAA's Forecast Systems Laboratory (FSL) and for training and research at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), both in Boulder, CO. The data are sent to the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) in Camp Springs, MD. In Florida, the data are used by NWS Weather Forecast Offices for local area weather prediction. They are also used at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) for weather prediction in support of launch operations. The data are also used by the Long Island Railroad for weather monitoring along their routes. This summer the data will be used for a major temperature and air quality study in the New England area. Congratulations to Steve for his award and thanks to all of you who go to the trouble and expense of setting up a weather station and sending your data to findu.com. All of your weather data are being put to good use. What better way to do the type of citizen public service that President Bush recently called for. It is the biggest congregation of hams in the U.S., if not the world, and the biggest congregation of APRS users, too. As a result, there is a lot going on APRS-wise at Dayton. So you won¹t miss a thing, there is now a new Web page (http://www.tapr.org/~wa1lou/2002/2002.html) that is intended to document APRS-related activities planned for the 2002 installment of the Hamvention. That page lists the following APRS-related information: >>> Forums that are APRS-related. >>> APRS-related companies, organizations, and individuals who will be camped out at some location in the Hara Arena or in the flea market. >>> Other APRS-related activities. >>> A list of your APRS compatriots who are planning to go to the Hamvention. Please email me (wa1lou@arrl.net) any additional information you may have regarding Dayton APRS activity. Here are some things I¹d like to add: >>> Where the APRS authors will be camped out. Is WB4APR going to be at the AMSAT booth as in the past? Where will the Sproul Bros. be this year? How about the rest of you APRS authors? >>> Is there going to be an APRS Pizza Party this year? >>> If you are planning to go to Dayton, let me know and I will add you to the ³Who¹s going to Dayton² list. >>> Also, regarding the information on how to APRS in Dayton. Is the information on the Web site current? If not, can somebody send me an update? Bdale is one of the long-time "good guys" in the digital radio and amateur satellite worlds. He was in the middle of the early work on KA9Q's "NET" and "NOS" programs, pioneered megabit-rate packet radio, and in the satellite world was heavily involved in the RUDAK and AO-40 GPS experiments. Back in the Old Days, he was a board member and Vice President of TAPR, and remains one of TAPR's best friends. On a different front, Bdale was just elected as Debian Project Leader, so he now oversees one of the major Linux distributions -- and the one that is by far the most ham-friendly. Bdale works in the Linux development group at HP, and in his spare (?) time does VHF/UHF/microwave contesting and roaming. Bdale's talk will blend all of these interests into an entertaining and informative presentation titled "From Bits in the Basement to Debian -- and Back Again". You can find more information about the Digital BASH and TAPR's other Hamvention activities at http://www.tapr.org/tapr/dayton/. In order to get more bang for our buck, K4HG and WA1LOU have joined forces to present the “floating APRS forum” at Dayton this year. Instead of having the same speakers speaking at both forums, each part of the floating forum will have a unique list of speakers. Part 1 of the forum is on Friday, 9:30-10:30 AM in Room 3. The speakers at Part 1 will be Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, Dale Huguley, KG5QD, Mike Musick, N0QBF, and Keith and/or Mark Sproul, WU2Z and/or KB2ICI. Part 2 of the forum is on Friday, 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM in Room 1. The speakers at Part 2 will be Steve Dimse, K4HG, and Michael Cai, KF6ZDM.
