Dennis, The MIC-E transmission is compressed thus the clear text you see at yor TNC looks strange. The APRS display programs such as WINAPRS and APRS_PLUS know about the MIC-E compression and properly decode the transmission. The purpose of the compression is to reduce the length of the MIC-E transmission to the neighborhood of 320 ms. Beacon text will extend the burst length since it is not compressed. For further reading, the MIC-E format is documented on the TAPR web site www.tapr.org 73, Dan Welch w6dfw@qsl.net From w2hob@bellatlantic.net Fri Nov 06 16:16:26 1998 Received: from iconmail.bellatlantic.net (iconmail.bellatlantic.net [199.173.162.30]) by tapr.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id QAA11544 for ; Fri, 6 Nov 1998 16:16:25 -0600 (CST) Received: from bellatlantic.net (client-151-204-207-102.bellatlantic.net [151.204.207.102]) by iconmail.bellatlantic.net (IConNet Sendmail) with ESMTP id RAA03177 for ; Fri, 6 Nov 1998 17:08:59 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: <36437377.FDC8250@bellatlantic.net> Date: Fri, 06 Nov 1998 17:08:55 -0500 From: Boyd Prestwood Reply-To: w2hob@bellatlantic.net X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.04 [en] (Win95; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: mic-e@tapr.org Subject: Re: [MIC-E:1731] Proper transmission References: <3643169B.5D758A32@worldnet.att.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Dennis Rieger wrote: > > password 908750973 > > I cannot get the MIC-E to send a proper message. APRS will interpret it just fine and display it on the maps if there is a valid POSIT in there. You won't see the POSIT though... remember, it's compressed and looks like gibberish! Generally, KK5DB-4*>PPPPPP would indicate the GPS hasn't locked on the birds yet and doesn't have a valid POSIT to send out... I don't remember what else the Mic-E will send... I also don't understand the r/ dl # a B/ either... do you any any telemetry attached? Hope this sheds a "little" light on the subj. First I'd like to thank all those that ansered my question re: the .pdf. I d/led acrobat and was able to finish off the mic-e. By the way, this represents the first time I've completed a kit from instructions in purely electronic form. Worked better than I thought it would. In any case, I did encounter a few problems. I have it working with a tm-v7a. I think on retrospect I should have used the data port, but I went with the mike port. Now, the mike only works with the mic-e while the mic-e is plugged in (though not necessarily on). Also, with the truck running, a terrible rf noise is generated, not when its off though. Also, even with the truck off, I can hear the rf noise from the gps (built in gps 25). I did look thru some previous posts about these very problems, but didnt see any specific info as to how to cure it. I also have a problem where the gps will lose lock, although I think that may have something to do with the mic-e being mounted immediately on top of the radio, and the rf is scrambling its brains. Turning it off for a few minutes and starting it up again usually cures that problem. I can live with having to use the mic-e permanently in line, but I need a solution to the noise problems. Any ideas? I also have an icom 2340 dual bander, which I am using for my aprs radio at the moment, would that be a more suitable radio for the mic-e? Also, how do you use the msg numbers on the mic-e? How do you program which message number does what and how would you read the message numbers with winaprs? Does winaprs even support the mic-e that way? Also, is there a list of mic-e capable repeaters around somewhere? I know of 2 in Fl, and at least one in Wa. Everywhere else I know about is RSN (real soo now). Anyways, am having a lot fun with it, and am trying to convince some of our local users to the benefits. I'd like to get mine working properly before I say much else though (grin). thanks for your time and 73! de Marc, VA3DRV. Now, the mike only works with the mic-e while the mic-e is plugged in (though not necessarily > on). If you want to use the Mic-E in its "standard" configuration, i.e., appending a packet to the end of the voice transmission, the the correct port is the mic port. The data port takes control of the voice port and interrupts it when a packet is sent to the V7A, contrary to what the Kenwood Newsletter said. You can leave the Mic-E in-line and turned off and the radio will function normally. ... > Also, how do you use the msg numbers on the mic-e?
